The Department of Architecture at National Quemoy University was established in 2005 to meet the demands of professionals in architecture and urbanism in the East and Southeast Asia. Its courses consist of five years of undergraduate training in architecture (B. Arch), and two to four years of master research program in architectural practices, sustainability, planning, the history of architecture, and criticism (M. Arch).
The department is located in an island, historically known as Quemoy, now named Kinmen. Rich in traditional settlements, military engineering, historical buildings, sociological and anthropological variety, together with zoological diversity, the island blesses the students and lecturers a wide perspective theoretically and practically. The island is also a laboratory for the Department to practice spatial, construction, technological or social ideas, and to test theories, coordinating with both public and private sectors.
Cooperation with other architectural professionals in Xiamen, which is mere 40 minutes ferry away from Quemoy, in Taiwan, and the rest of the World, is held in every academic term. That includes third year design workshops co-lecture with the Xiamen University, exchange-students schemes between architectural departments in Xiamen, Nanjing, and Sichuan Universities, and the others. Annual workshops and seminars organized by architects, managers, consultants, and government employees from Australia, New Zeeland, Malaysia, Hongkong, Japan, and Czech take place here to discuss means of urban regeneration and heritage conservation as part of graduate school courses. Lectures by prominent professionals are constantly opened both to the department and the university. At the moment, the faculty is establishing deeper connection with the Korea University and the University of Malaya.
Students are not just trained to be architects, but to be architects who are capable to change our ways of living for the better.
Courses:
Courses include undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The core of the undergraduate courses in architecture is Design studios, which run through students’ five years study in the department. The Design studios are the calculation of all other courses, which is divided into 4 main fields: Engineering, Sustainability, Urbanism, and Humanity. The engineering courses include Mechanics, Strength of materials, Construction, and Structure. The sustainability lectures are Ecological system, Physical environment of architecture, Environmental controls, Energy efficiency and Ecological architecture. Cultural landscape, Site planning, Urban plans, Participatory planning, Settlement conservation, Regional plans, Urban regeneration, and Urban design are the courses lectured regarding Urbanism in the department. History courses, such as World Architecture, Modern history of architecture, Traditional language of architecture, and the Criticism on the East Asian Architecture composes the major part of humanity courses. There are Architecture program, Social duties, Cultural and heritage conservation, Historical building preservation, and Cultural creativity to add in the section of humanity course. Professional training includes drafting, sketching, measuring and drawing, CADs, and GISs, et cetera. A high and raising percentage of undergraduates studying in the World-leading architectural graduate school can now be seen.
In the master programme, Heritage conservation, Energy and hazard control, and Planning and design are the strengths of master researches carried out in the department. All supervisors of these researches earned their Ph.D.s in England, U.S., Germany, Japan and Taiwan, and are open for different challenges in architectural research. Postgraduate students are award degree on their design in conceptual architecture, their buildings built in towns, and their results in energy experiments, their coordination with public sectors, and their studies in every aspect of architecture, i.e., sociological spaces, anthropological concepts, histories, policies, planning and so on. These masters are expected to be originality in their future working environments. Our master graduates have now taken a major part in the public sectors, such as Economics, Public Works, and Cultural Affairs Bureaus, as well as elementary and middle schools.
Job Futures:
Both the master program and the undergraduate research are designed to shape the alumnus to be professionals in the trades of construction, architecture, (together with interior), heritage managing and repairing, cultural industries, and any other professionals that involved creative thinking. Through national examination, the alumnus can practise as qualified architects, interior designers, urban planners, landscape architects, heritage managers, or be government employees.
